A bold contemporary design breathing new life into an old and established garden in the Merchiston area of Edinburgh.

This garden contained a large amount of overly mature shrubs and our first task was to decide which had sufficient character to stay and which were past their best.

Once these were removed the potential of the garden became much more evident.

​

Some of the remaining shrubs were repositioned and some were crown-lifted to show off shapely stems and open up views through the garden. This retained the mature and settled feel of the garden while introducing new dimensions and interesting layers. 

​

Taking cues from the shape of the rear extension a new more dynamic layout for the garden was envisaged. The main house patio was extended allowing a more proportional relationship to thee extension. The lawn and borders were reshaped providing connection with the exciting geometry of the extension and the new patio.

Re-siting solid stone steps and re-using old stone paving from the front garden enabled the garden to retain it's character.

​

Clearing a lower area of solid old shrubs revealed the potential for a sunny new dining terrace with a sunken area of planting providing a bridge to the upper garden.

 

The garden's owners love to sit down here surrounded by old stone, watching bees on the flowers, listening to the birds and the sound of water moving gently in the new water bowl.

Colourful, lush, full planting was used to provide drama and interest throughout the garden.
